I think it’s working…

My experiment with blood sugar

Some time ago, I started experimenting with alternatives to metformin. To recap, I had been told that my blood sugar levels [the HbA1c] was just in the diabetic range [51] and that I would have another test in a few weeks to confirm. If I did have diabetes I would be put on a list that I may never come off, apparently.

So that was embarrassing because I teach students about diabetes 2 and give herbs and advice to patients with diabetes 2, so I ought to have known what to do to avoid it, and yet I hadn’t.

But, as I said early in the year, the game was on. I did two or three things; I upped my exercise [it would be more accurate to say that I started to exercise] by going for walks everyday with my husband. And I added mulberry leaf tea and fenugreek capsules to my daily diet. I also did not let anything with potatoes or alcohol in pass my lips, and I severely limited my bread intake to one home-made-organic-spelt-with-seeds slice a day.

My next blood test had dropped from 51 to 50. Not massive but hey…

This continued for several months with me testing my blood sugar levels after eating all sorts of things, and I gathered a lot of interesting info.

  • I absolutely, definitely, categorically, cannot touch potatoes in any shape or form.
  • I can eat exactly the same meal as my husband, with the same quantities on our matching plates, and his blood sugar would be normal, and mine would shoot up.
  • Some of my friends were more diabetic than I was

And then I lost my blood sugar testing gadget.

For two months I limped on hoping for the best, but without my monitor to tell me if I was going in the right direction.

Two weeks ago I had another blood test, and I was a little concerned about what the outcome would be.

47

My HbA1c is 47!

That means I am no longer actually diabetic as such. I am prediabetic.

I rushed to a textbook to confirm. And there it says – under 48 HbA1c Not Diabetes.

So now I just have to get out of the prediabetes range.

I will let you know….
