Make some and see…
I was talking at the weekend to someone who had had the feeling that she was coming down with a head cold and had indeed started to develop symptoms. She took one tablespoon of a ‘substance’ and her symptoms went more or less straight away.
She then described a situation soon after with her teenage son where he was coming down with something nasty, and she gave him some of the same ‘substance’. He also experienced a very quick reversal of symptoms.
It seemed that she had experienced such success with this stuff that in the future it was going to feature permanently in her home remedy selection.
If you know me at all I think you will probably assume that this substance wasn’t Lemsip or Calpol. No. I asked her ‘what is this stuff?’
Apparently, a mutual acquaintance had made it and let her try it out.
It involved certain vegetables, salt, and a lot of squishing by hand…
I asked this acquaintance today how she had made it, and it sounded like a regular, fermentation-type experiment. Would I call it fire cider? I don’t know, I do know that there has been a lot of appropriation of original recipes and lots of people have their own take on this.
But, as you know, word of mouth is a powerful tool, and this acquaintance described how she had just squished together grated carrots, chopped onions, shredded cabbage, fresh garlic, ginger and chillies with 2% of weight of veg of sea salt. And as she described the squishing her hands acted out the procedure vividly…
And she left it two weeks.
Why should this be so effective?
Because of this listed here, my friends:
Immune Support: Fermented foods are rich in probiotics, which support a healthy gut microbiome and strengthen the immune system.
Antimicrobial Properties: Fermented garlic contains allicin, which has antimicrobial and antiviral effects that help fight colds and flu.
Anti-inflammatory Effects: Chili contains capsaicin, which has anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce congestion. Fermentation improves nutrient bioavailability.
Vitamin Boost: Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A, supporting mucosal barriers in the respiratory tract. Fermentation enhances nutrient availability.
Symptom Relief: The combination of fermented cabbage, garlic, carrots, and chili helps soothe sore throats, congestion, and fatigue while providing a nutrient boost.
What I will say is this; if it is so simple, and so effective, WHY DOESN’T EVERYBODY DO THIS?
And if this acquaintance is reading this; remember you promised me some.
