Food is medicine, right? Well it can be. If the food you eat is nutritious and contains minerals and vitamins, unrefined carbohydrates, proteins and good natural fats, then it will be giving your body what it needs to function well.
So if the bulk of supermarket food is processed and packed, contained additives or is covered with pesticides etc etc… what can we do? Buying an organic box is very nice, but expensive. Could we perhaps grow some veggies ourselves?
I know this is difficult or impossible for the elderly, those with certain disabilities, or those who live in flats. But I am healthy and have a forgotten piece of garden behind my husband’s office. For some months I have played about with this – grown some stuff but then abandoned the concept because caterpillars and pigeons decimated my crops. So I bought some mesh and water pipes to make hoops and tunnels, and then stuffed it into a greenhouse and left it there unused because of one thing, which is this…
Online gardening blogs and Instagram channels made me feel inferior. My bit of land was too scruffy, my knowledge too limited, my attempts too paltry. I had lost confidence in my ability to grow anything, or to stick at trying. So I just left it and moved on…
Except last week I got angry with myself. I have the soil, I have the space, the mesh, the pipes and the time. Even if my amateur attempts at copying what I see on gardening social media is pretty poor, I won’t get better until I start. So here are some photos of my tunnel with some veggies already in it.
Growing herbs is so much easier in my herb garden by my dispensary – but hey, they are ‘weeds’ anyway and we know how easily weeds grow. I think veggie growing is my nemesis, but I am determined to crack it, however long it takes. So I will continue to follow Byther Farm [Friends of Liz Zorab – Byther Farm] and Huw Richards on Facebook and inch by inch I am determined to get better. My next job is mulch production from dead wood and twigs pruned from all our hedges.
Once I have mended my shredder…
