What Danger Lurks…

When gardening is scary.

At 7.30 this morning I put on my wellies and decided to get an hour of gardening in before the real day’s work started.

This was a simple wish to tidy up, sweep leaves, do some weeding around my Autumn raspberries, and spread some mulch.

I found it a trifle traumatising. I am scared of spiders. They are everywhere.

Why can’t they appear en masse in Spring and prevent insects laying their eggs on my produce? Why wait until holes in leaves have been made by said insects and foliage stripped bare and vast damage is done, then appear and taunt me with their presence?

My neighbours see me walking around my garden waving a stick in front of my face, as though I am casting spells over my vegetables, when in reality I am carving my way through swathes of sticky webs festooned with creepy creatures with hairy legs waiting to jump on my head and crawl down my neck.

Down the back of my neck where I can’t reach them…

Look…

They lay in wait in every part of my garden.

At least with the early morning dew I can see them before they see me.
